Listen Later

Show Notes for week of 2/18/2019 Ep 6

Have you ever read the Dictator's Handbook by Bruce Bueno De Mesquita? This book opens with an amazing story about the City of Bell.

In 2010, a city of roughly 37,000 had some of the highest paid government workers in the country.

Through manipulating the law and the voting population a small constituency was able to squander millions of dollars from the voters in Bell, California.

We may never known if not for the reporting done by Jeff Gotlieb and Ruben Vives

The City of Bell Scandal is just one story from the Southeast Los Angeles County area. You also have the City of Industry and Vernon being embroiled in their own scandals as well.

Season 2 of True Detective is said to be based on the corruption that embroils this area.

Did you know that this week in history we saw contraception come into existence?

Turns out that it took quite a long time for contraception to become as available as it is today.

We also get a rise out of some elevators and pick up some facts about toothpicks.
