Portage or portaging is the practice of carrying water craft or cargo over land, either around an obstacle in a river, or between two bodies of water. A path where items are regularly carried between bodies of water is also called a portage. In Canada, the term "carrying-place" was sometimes used in English.
Vancouver Island has a few of these challenging routes that connect bodies of water through the use of portaging techniques. This week, we’ll be joined by my friends Rachel and Nathan Allemekinders who have just recently completed the Sayward Forest Canoe Route on the North Island and are ready to share their experiences and insights into this legendary way of adventuring the wilderness!
We’ll talk about the route, what it does to you mentally, physically, and even relationally between adventure partners. Topics include route finding, stories of the Sayward Forest, the history of portaging and much more.
