There was time when the whole world was practising natural religions like Hinduism. So what changed, when and where? For that, we need to know the history of the monotheisms, starting with Judaism, then moving on to Christianity and Islam.

Most Hindus are not aware that the West and Europe was not always Christian. We need to understand the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of monotheistic religions since we see the same battle playing out in India today.

Understanding the strategies employed will make us better prepared to hold on to the few natural religions left in the world today. It will help us keep our kids safe and pass on our traditions and knowledge systems to our children.

Rama Sesan Chandrasekharan has a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from IIT Madras. He is a self-taught linguist and a scholar of history.
