O.P. Almaraz worked for some of the biggest names in the property restoration industry before deciding to flex his entrepreneurial muscles and start his own water and fire damage response company. As he shares in his TedX Talk, those early years in business placed great strain on him personally and professionally, to the point he was ready to throw in the towel.   O.P. shares his experiences with some key aspects of his personal development as a person in a position of leadership as well as for his organization:

  • You have to really care for your people.   This includes communicating the vision and training the team to achieve the goals. This does not mean that everyone will get it or be aligned with your objectives. Sometimes you have to allow employees to exit the company.
  • Double down on your commitment to your ideal client.   As a person in a position of leadership, you will have to become the type of leader necessary to see the vision through. As you pursue those goals, you must be able to deconstruct those skills and attributes (the leadership download) so that your team can see and believe the vision.
  • You don't have to have everything figured out.   You need to demonstrate consistent intention to be resourceful and helpful to your ideal client if you want to build trust and a presence in your target market. Prepare the team, spread the message, and be ready to capitalize when you are given the opportunity.

  • O.P. discusses many of the lessons learned while growing as a person in a position of leadership on this episode of Benchmarks of Growth. This is part 5 of 6 from The DYOJO Podcast.

In his early years he learned and struggled with third party administrators (TPAs) and program work. When he went out on his own, he wanted to build a company that didn't rely on these sources of work. He identified high net-worth clients and celebrities as a key area of growth for his company. Even with this large goal, O.P. talks about how he thinks it has been important to keep his team small.
