Welcome to my first episode of my series I affectionately call, MiniPod's!
I've designed these episodes to be quick informational/educational episodes to discuss certain ND/ADHD-related topics that are important convos that need to be had.
Today's episode discusses a topic that is a very real issue that all ND's(neurodivergent folks) experience - masking.
According to The Brain Charity* (see Source citation below linked under "Helpful Links"), Masking is "...the act of suppressing or concealing neurodivergent traits in schools and workplace in order to appear neurotypical." The article continues, "(n)eurodivergent people who mask their conditions tend to do this by mimicking or mirroring the behaviors of neurotypical people around them, such as their peers, colleagues or friends."
In this episode I discuss what Masking is, draw examples of how it may appear in your life, and what to do in the moment when you notice that you're masking.
I also bring up the topic of Ableism, and how this form of prejudice is unfair and absurd; how masking leads to burnout, as well as a friendly and necessary reminder that it's not your job to make others feel comfortable when they're around you!
You deserve to exist wholly, unapologetically as yourself, without external, people-pleasing (and frankly stupid) expectations that keep you small and miserable!
