The Stockdale paradox can save us a lot of grief and disappointment. Have hope and faith without ignoring harsh realities. Being positive is good if you don't put conditions on it. Having faith is important and is effective as long as you are submitted to God and not trying to control Him and how the outcome should go. Expectations can lift us or destroy us.
