I talk to people every day who choose to focus on political reform or some kind of great revolution rather than focusing on improving their own situation.

There are many things that we should change on a societal level. That change takes a long time. Changing things on a personal level is much faster.

You can't wait for the government to fix things for you. You can't wait for the slow arc of history to change things.

If you want to work to change the world, that's great! That's noble! That's wonderful!

Wouldn't it be better to be a wealthy influential revolutionary than a broke powerless revolutionary?

So, keep working to change the world, but also work to change your world. Don't use "the system" as an excuse. People just like you are finding opportunities to carve out their own place in the economy, to control their income, and to control their schedule.

It's hard to march in the revolution at noon if your shift starts at 1.
