James makes it clear that suffering is not an excuse to turn inward but rather an opportunity to mature and focus outward. In doing so we need to understand that God has a purpose to our walk with Him. Serving people is at the core of Christianity and not just empty words. Serving people also takes place in community and we must avoid building community on standards that the world system values like wealth and prestige
