Today's poem is "Detail" by Eamon Grennan.

Eamon Grennan is an Irish poet who has lived and worked in the USA for more than half a century. He taught English at Vassar University in Poughkeepsie, New York and has published 25 collections of poetry over the past 40 years.

Billy Collins, the former US Poet Laureate — whose poem "Forgetfulness" you can hear in Episode 28 of this podcast — once said of Grennan: "To read him is to be led on a walk through the natural world of clover and cricket and, most of all, light, and to face with an open heart the complexity of being human."

"Detail" is a poem about poetry itself, about the deep momentous truth that can arrive in a single all-powerful instant of beauty or horror or some other thing that transports us to another plane.
