#87 | A Mindful Difficult Discussion about Suicide with Therapist Melody Murray

On the Inspiring You Show, we have decided to start having mindful conversations on difficult subjects. May is Mental health awareness month so we are going to talk about Suicide. We encourage all of you to listen to this discussion of one of the most ‘taboo’ topics that is begging for a frank and open discussion. Talking about suicide can be uncomfortable yet it’s important for all of us to become better educated on the issue, work on prevention and remove the stigma.

Last month April 2022, 20-year-old Lauren Bernett, a sophomore catcher and cleanup hitter for the James Madison University softball team, died. A medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. At least four other college athletes took their lives in March and April.

At least five NCAA athletes have died by suicide in less than two months, leaving five families grieving and five teams figuring out how to cope.

Over the past 20 years, the number of U.S. adults attempting suicide has jumped This indicates that a significant portion of our population is experiencing severe emotional issues and, at the very least, high levels of stress.

  • According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention):
  • Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States,3 with 45,979 deaths in 2020. This is about one death every 11 minutes.3 The number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher. In 2020, an estimated 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide.
  • Suicide affects all ages. In 2020, suicide was among the top 9 leading causes of death for people ages 10-64. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-14 and 25-34.3
  • One alarming aspect of suicide is its frequency among young people, particularly college students. Suicide is the #2 leading cause of death for college students. Experts urge colleges to invest in mental health services, rather than slash their budgets.
  • One in four people aged 18 to 24 seriously contemplated suicide in June, according to new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pandemic Increasing Suicidal Ideation The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a dramatic rise in mental health problems. 
  • Joining us for this difficult conversation to bring awareness, tips, tools and support, we have therapist Melody Murray. Melody is also a motivational speaker teaching on topics such as self-care, effects of childhood trauma, coping techniques, creating and maintaining boundaries and managing suicidal ideation.
