The 70s marked a tumultuous time for the American people. We were in the middle of a heavily protested war which led President Nixon to question his chances of winning the 1974 election. Paranoid and desperate, he sanctioned a break-in of the DNC’s headquarters at the Watergate Business Complex. 
Until this point, Americans respected government officials. But after such a betrayal, conspiracies began to bubble up and people would begin to lose trust in government officials.
