NIER is an action RPG set roughly 3000 years after an apocalypse devastated the Earth. The upside is magic is real now, the downside is everyone is dying. Resources are scarce, monsters called Shades roam the land, and a deadly magic disease called the Black Scrawl is running rampant.

Nier is a big burly guy trying to do right by his daughter, Yonah. He stumbles across a talking book who just might be able to cure the Black Scrawl, but only if he can find all the Sealed Verses. So Nier departs on a journey across a blighted land into a sea of depression. It's better than it sounds.
