What is an idea - is it just a thought with intent?

When do you take ownership of that idea - how do you know it's yours and not a thought someone else has already been thinking about?

When you no longer have any use for an idea you've been thinking about do you pass it on to someone else or just forget about it? Where do all those forgotten ideas end up?
