Beyond the Reefs

EP018: Mother Earth's raw power rumbling under the hood

Listen Later

Join host Joey Chou as he dives into socio-economic issues faced by Taiwan, and their broader impact beyond the reefs of this island nation.

Taiwan is looking at ways to turn geothermal energy into an economic boost for the region. Economic Affairs Minister Kuo mentioned that if data centers could be built near these geothermal plants, they could run on green energy, creating more jobs and potentially turning Yilan into a digital hub.

To make all of this happen, the government is also looking at investing in talent. They’re offering subsidies to train professionals in the geothermal energy sector, aiming to build a full-fledged industry that could support Taiwan’s transition to clean energy.

And get this—if this drilling project works out, it won’t be a one-off. The government sees potential for up to 1,000 geothermal wells across Taiwan. That would be a game-changer for the island’s energy landscape.

So, is geothermal the next big thing for Taiwan? If this project delivers on its promise, we could be looking at a future where geothermal energy plays a major role in Taiwan’s clean energy mix. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Today’s guest is the CEO of Baseload Power Taiwan, Van Hoang.
