Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS damages the motor neurons that control voluntary muscles, causing them to die. As a result, people with ALS may experience muscle weakness, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. This episode dives into the background of ALS, other common neurodegenerative disorders, impact to aging, and current options for therapy.
