You never know where a business idea can come from. You just have to have an open ear to listen. That’s exactly what Brett Johnson did at Fire Drops when he collaborated with a client and co-founded this awesome company.
Brett met Anita, a client of the design studio he was working with at the time. Anita and Brett shared an interest in healthy and organic living and Anita had an idea to produce a throat lozenge with cayenne pepper in it. Cayenne pepper is believed to be a natural healing agent for congestion. So, there’s the idea, from there it’s history.
Just days before this podcast was recorded, Brett left his full time job to pursue Fire Drops full time. That being said, there are 3 important pieces of advice from Brett that we believe are very beneficial to people who are
a) starting a side hustle or
b) considering leaving their day job to take on a side hustle full time:
Figuring Out When the Time Is Right to Go Full Time.
Many entrepreneurs who have a side hustle are constantly thinking about the “formula” that will help determine if and when they leave their full time job to take their side hustle on full time. Brett was working 5-10 hours a week when he realized that this idea is starting to grow. I’m spending time calling clients for one job when I really want and need to be calling clients for the other.
The question “what could happen if I put at least 40 hours a week into this” is always daunting. But when you come to that realization and what you could produce in that 40 hours, you have to come to a decision and Brett recently decided to take a jump in the deep end.
What Type of Business Partner to Team Up With
Everyone’s always heard don’t do business with family or your best friend. Well Brett says phooey on that and decided to team up with his brother Scott. "Never doing business with family or your best friend is not true. You just have to find people that work well with you and have opposite strengths and gifts as you.”
The important part is not whether they are family or not, it’s how can your different strengths work together to produce something great. We couldn’t agree more as Will and I (as you probably know if you listen to anything we put out) are very different.
Have patience in the Beginning
"Speak directly to your audience and have patience. You aren’t going to get where you want to go overnight. It’s probably going to take years to get to that so keep working hard. Don’t rush things. If you have the work ethic you’re going to get where you want to go, you just have to have patience.” I think that’s enough said.
Great pieces of advice, but make sure to hear everything during our interview with Brett by tuning into today’s episode. It will not disappoint.
