Taiwan is often seen as a regional leader in this area, frequently ranking among the countries with the strongest animal protection laws. The island captured international headlines in 2017 when it became the first country in Asia to ban euthanasia in animal shelters—a landmark policy shift that sparked a surge in adoptions and sent a powerful message about compassion and responsibility. But even with forward-thinking legislation, challenges persist. From cases of cruelty and neglect to concerns over unregulated breeding and pet abandonment, the road to meaningful protection is far from over.
