Taiwan has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate goals. The government has outlined 12 key strategies to achieve this, focusing on areas like renewable energy, hydrogen development, energy storage, and carbon capture technologies. These initiatives are designed to transform Taiwan's energy landscape and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

 

But the clock is ticking. Taiwan’s roadmap to net-zero by 2050 is promising, but promises alone don’t reduce emissions. Every year of delay locks us deeper into fossil fuel dependency, making future transitions harder and costlier. Our per capita emissions are already higher than many larger nations — a signal that business-as-usual is no longer acceptable. If the climate crisis is a house on fire, then a carbon fee of ten U.S. dollars is like throwing a glass of water on the flames. We need bolder action — now.
