* Rick grew up in a military family and moved around a lot as a child. He said that he was not especially close with his siblings, but had tremendous love and respect for his family.

* Rick struggled with feelings of inferiority, confusion and inner turmoil as an adolescent. Because he was unprepared to manage these feelings on his own, he said he discovered drugs and alcohol at an early age.
