Maarten: Hey Lisa. Alles goed met jou?
Hey Lisa. How are you doing?

Lisa: Jazeker! Ik ben net op een verjaardag geweest. Pfoe. Ik ben helemaal vol van de kaas en de worst.
Absolutely! I've just been to a birthday party. Phew. I'm completely full from the cheese and sausage.

Maarten: Ah, de klassieke Nederlandse verjaardag. Heb je ook netjes in een kring gezeten?
Ah, the classic Dutch birthday party. Did you also sit neatly in a circle?

Lisa: Natuurlijk! En daarom wilde ik het vandaag met jou over Nederlandse tradities hebben.
Of course! And that's why I wanted to talk to you about Dutch traditions today.

Maarten: Ja precies. De verjaardag in de kring. Wat vind jij daar nou van?
Yes, exactly. The birthday party in a circle. What do you think of that?

Lisa: Eerlijk? Ik vind het een beetje ongemakkelijk. Je zit daar op een stoel, in een grote cirkel, en je kan alleen praten met de persoon naast je.
Honestly? I find it a bit awkward. You sit there on a chair, in a big circle, and you can only talk to the person next to you.

Maarten: Haha, dat is waar. Maar het is wel een echte traditie.
Haha, that's true. But it is a real tradition.

Lisa: En dan moet je iedereen feliciteren! 'Gefeliciteerd met de jarige'. En dan zeggen zij: 'Dank je, jij ook gefeliciteerd'. Waarom?

Lisa: Oh ja, Sinterklaas! Dat is een goede. Heb jij dat vroeger ook veel gevierd?

Maarten: Zeker, met de hele familie. We kregen altijd een grote zak met cadeautjes voor de deur. Dat was een leuke verrassing.

Lisa: Wauw! Wij moesten altijd liedjes zingen. En dan aten we natuurlijk heel veel pepernoten.
Wow! We always had to sing songs. And then, of course, we ate a lot of pepernoten.

Maarten: Ja, die pepernoten zijn het beste. Op school vieren we het nu ook nog steeds. De kinderen vinden dat geweldig.

Lisa: Leuk! En maakten jullie ook gedichten bij de cadeaus?

Maarten: Jazeker. Mijn vader heeft altijd een heel lang en grappig gedicht geschreven voor iedereen.

Maarten: Koninkrijksdag? Dat is op 15 december. Het is de dag dat we de speciale relatie tussen de landen in het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden vieren.
Kingdom Day? That's on December 15th. It's the day we celebrate the special relationship between the countries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Lisa: Oh! Dus het gaat niet alleen over Nederland?

No, not really. It's a feeling. Warm, nice, together. And you just mentioned 'the poem'. What exactly is that again?

Lisa: Oh ja, een gedicht is een tekst met rijm. Vaak is het een beetje grappig en persoonlijk, speciaal voor de persoon die het cadeau krijgt.
Oh yes, a poem is a text with rhyme. Often it's a bit funny and personal, especially for the person receiving the gift.

Maarten: Precies. Een typische Sinterklaas traditie, net als die kring een typische verjaardagstraditie is.
Exactly. A typical Sinterklaas tradition, just like that circle is a typical birthday tradition.

Lisa: Dus, we hebben het gehad over die rare Nederlandse verjaardag in een kring, die ik dus niet zo leuk vind.
So, we talked about that weird Dutch birthday in a circle, which I don't really like.

Maarten: Haha, ja. En over Sinterklaas, wat we allebei wel een gezellig feest vinden met pepernoten, cadeaus en een gedicht.
