Hi Maarten!

Maarten: Hey Lisa, alles goed?
Hey Lisa, how are you?

Lisa: Nou, ik had vanochtend een beetje stress. Ik wilde op de markt een broodje kopen, maar de man zei: 'Sorry, je kunt hier alleen contant betalen'.
Well, I had a bit of stress this morning. I wanted to buy a sandwich at the market, but the man said: 'Sorry, you can only pay cash here'.

Maarten: Echt? Contant geld? Dat hoor je bijna nooit meer. Meestal is het andersom.
Really? Cash? You hardly ever hear that anymore. Usually, it's the other way around.

Lisa: Ja precies! Ik moest dus op zoek naar een pinautomaat. Zo ouderwets!
Exactly! So I had to look for an ATM. So old-fashioned!

Maarten: Haha, dat is wel een goed begin voor ons gesprek over geld, denk ik.
Haha, that's a good start for our conversation about money, I think.

Lisa: Zeker. Ik heb bijna nooit meer contant geld bij me. Ik betaal alles met mijn pinpas, het liefst contactloos.
Definitely. I hardly ever carry cash anymore. I pay for everything with my debit card, preferably contactless.

Maarten: Ik ook. Het is zo makkelijk. Vroeger moest je altijd zorgen dat je genoeg munten en biljetten in je portemonnee had.
Me too. It's so easy. Before, you always had to make sure you had enough coins and banknotes in your wallet.

Lisa: Oh ja! En dan stond je te zoeken naar kleingeld. Ik wilde laatst in een café betalen en ze hadden een bordje: 'Hier alleen pinnen'.

Maarten: Dat zie je steeds vaker. Voor winkels is het ook veiliger, denk ik. Minder contant geld in de kassa.

Lisa: Dat is waar. En met vrienden is het ook veranderd. We gebruiken nooit meer geld.

Maarten: Nee, precies. Je stuurt gewoon een Tikkie.

Lisa: Altijd! Gisteren betaalde ik de lunch, en ik stuurde meteen een Tikkie voor het juiste bedrag naar iedereen. Binnen een minuut had ik het geld op mijn bankrekening.
Always! Yesterday I paid for lunch, and I immediately sent a Tikkie for the correct amount to everyone. Within a minute I had the money in my bank account.

Maarten: Het is wel heel efficiënt. Ik kon me een paar jaar geleden niet voorstellen dat het zo snel zou gaan.

Lisa: Nee, ik ook niet. Toen moest je nog iemands hele IBAN-nummer vragen om geld over te maken.

Maarten: Ja, en dan duurde het soms een dag. Nu is het direct. Ik vraag me af of kinderen nu nog leren sparen met een spaarpot.

Maarten: Haha, ja, dat gevoel ken ik. Nu zie je alleen een getal op een scherm.
Haha, yes, I know that feeling. Now you only see a number on a screen.

Lisa: Oh wacht, je zegt 'geld overmaken'. Is dat eigenlijk hetzelfde als een Tikkie sturen?
Oh wait, you say 'transfer money'. Is that actually the same as sending a Tikkie?

Maarten: Nou ja, het resultaat is hetzelfde: het geld gaat van de ene bankrekening naar de andere. Maar een Tikkie is een soort betaalverzoek. Het maakt het overmaken makkelijker.
Well, the result is the same: the money goes from one bank account to another. But a Tikkie is a kind of payment request. It makes transferring easier.

Lisa: Ah, ja, logisch. En 'pinnen' en 'contactloos betalen', dat is ook net iets anders, hè?
Ah, yes, logical. And 'paying with a debit card' and 'contactless payment', that's also slightly different, right?

Maarten: Ja precies. Pinnen is als je je pinpas in het apparaat stopt en je code intypt. Contactloos is als je de pas er alleen maar tegenaan houdt. Voor een klein bedrag.
Yes, exactly. Paying with a debit card is when you insert your debit card into the device and type in your code. Contactless is when you just hold the card against it. For a small amount.

Lisa: Duidelijk! Ik doe dus bijna alles contactloos.
Clear! So I do almost everything contactless.

Maarten: Dus, we hadden het over de verandering van betalen. Van contant geld naar pinnen.
So, we were talking about the change in payment. From cash to debit card payments.

Lisa: Ja, en over hoe contactloos betalen en een Tikkie sturen nu helemaal normaal zijn. Ik kon me dat vroeger echt niet voorstellen.
