Ep1 Outer Limits- Behavior Analysis in the Fringes (Ethics CEU)

Listen Later

“Behavior analysis is not a profession in and of itself; it is a science of behavior and hence, should be a foundation of any profession that deals with human behavior.”

Norman and Kohn 2013 (Don’t Wag the Dog: Extending the reach of behavior analysis)

In the early dawn of behavior analytic time, Skinner arose from respondent ashes to show that behavior could also be controlled by its consequences. From the not-so-simple basic principle of reinforcement to the shaping and development of culture and organizations, the science of behavior analysis shows applications across the galaxy. Unfortunately, these other galaxies and planetary applications may not be as widely known as the application of behavior analysis with certain populations. In this episode, we review where the field started, where it’s at currently regarding diversity in application, and what are just some of the potential options for exploration.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify some of the potentially unknown areas of application from early scientist-practitioners in the field.

2. Describe potential variables that currently maintain the status quo for the field of behavior analysis.

3. Describe the importance of expanding competencies and potential recommendations for doing so ethically.

4. Recognize and give examples of “BA on the fringes”- how other behavior analysts apply the science.

Take Aways- Your on-the-go educational nom

· The history of behavior analysis is full of individuals who demonstrated the versatility in research and application.

· Behavior analysis is a really cool science that is applicable across organisms and environments.

· For those who are looking to diversify outside of their professional area of emphasis, there are several parts of our field to explore.

· Some of those include but are not limited to health and wellness, sports, anxiety and mental health, animal rescue and training.
