Coming to terms with your own identity can take time and often that time can be spread over a number of years. 

By her own admission, Mindy Friedman's coming out to her mum and dad was somewhat passive aggressive in nature. 

Mindy expected her mum and dad to embrace her coming out with the same unconditional love she had become accustomed to all her life however this wasn't the case.
