Ep.11 - A Theology of Work

Listen Later

We live in an age when we have two extremes in our approach to work, which are often found in the same person. On the one hand, work is a major source of identity for us. It gives us meaning and worth and purpose, it keeps our lives going. That is why we are always trying to find “the perfect career” that fits our life and character, we want to climb the ladder, build our portfolio and qualifications. Work, in that sense, is often the "god" of the modern person's life. On the other hand, we want to as little true hard work as possible, and have as much leisure and fun as possible. We are an entertainment driven age and we face a major struggle between production and consumption in life.
As christians, we face an extra layer of challenges in this area. Many christians often adopt a dualistic view of life in which the "spiritual" is important and the "physical" is passing and worldly. In this perspective, we are often left asking, "does my work matter?" It seems that the emphasis in church is that the main thing that matters is church ministry, missions work and evangelism. If it does, why does it matter? Is it merely an avenue for evangelism to people? Enjoy the episode!
