Ep.12: Nothing Like The Holidays

Listen Later

This week the papis head to Humboldt Park for Nothing Like The Holidays (2008) starring Freddy Rodríguez, John Leguizamo, and Debra Messing. The messy, cozy Christmas dramedy about the Rodriguez clan trying to survive what might be their last Navidad together. We get into Jesse's return from Iraq and his survivor's guilt, Mauricio rolling in from New York with his wife Sarah, Roxanna coming home from Hollywood with more doubts than credits, and all the big holiday blow-ups between Edy and Anna as the "Where are my grandbabies?!" pressure hits a boiling point. We also talk Jesse's unresolved romance with Marissa, the gang tensions swirling around Ozzy and Johnny, what this movie gets right about Puerto Rican family dynamics and where it fumbles—from the weird Puerto Rican accents, to the out-of-place timing of the PR Day Parade in Chicago, to a throwaway colorism line that lets us test the heat of 00's movies. Let us know what you rate the film, and tell us what we should watch next!
