Based on the story by Edward Everett Hale. The story follows an American army lieutenant, Philip Nolan, who during a treason trial declares he never wants to hear about the United States again. As a consequence, he is sentenced to spend the rest of his life on naval ships, never allowed to set foot on American soil or receive any news about the country.


The story was published during the American Civil War, and was intended to inspire patriotism among citizens by highlighting the severity of renouncing one's country.
