The Catchup

Ep.132: EOlympics, Dream Sport for the Games, and the Billionaire Space Race

Listen Later

This week kicks off the start of Tokyo 2020, delayed last year due to the pandemic. This year's Olympics faces a few new events, including surfing and skateboarding. So it begs the question, what sports would YOU like to see added to the lineup for Paris 2024? We discuss our favorite options, including the possible addition of Esports. Denison makes a strong case for why it - and possibly chess - should both qualify. This as record-breaking heat and even a typhoon bear down on Japan, making for unique conditions at an already-unique Olympic Games.

Then, criticism is piling in after billionaires Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) and Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic) take their respective inaugural rides to the outskirts of space. Many people are wondering why they gained the ability to take the futuristic trips during a pandemic. Others are wondering why their money wasn't going toward something more immediately helpful to mankind. We react to the criticism, sharing our opinions on why we think it is so critical to boldly go where no one has gone before, and how these billionaires are already doing their part to give back.
