Gil Castle, whose career spans the time when GIS was first utilized by businesses for planning, analysis and in particular for a competitive advantage. As a keen observer of the technology, he then published one of the first books that detailed the many applications of GIS for businesses and how to capitalize on the technology: the book "Profiting from a Geographic Information System" was published in 1993 and opened up a new chapter in how GIS was adopted beyond traditional applications like government.
