1971年11月24日，西北航空305號班機即將從美國的波特蘭機場，飛往西雅圖。然而過程中被一名神秘男子劫持了飛機，在一系列的要求跟操作之下，男子成功獲取他想要的贖金，並且無人傷亡，隨後男子跳機消失了，經過多年，D·B·庫柏已經成為傳說的代名詞。
