EP22 - Native English Speaker Learns Hard-to-Pronounce Words

Listen Later

Stumbled upon 31 Commonly Mispronounced Words and figured it would be helpful to hear a native English speaker struggle, think and learn pronunciations of words. A key insight is that native English speakers aren't crippled by the incongruencies between a word's pronunciation and its spelling. Non-native English speakers focus very heavily on this mismatch and at times, are paralyzed by it rather than being able to move on.

Native English speakers will naturally encounter new words that they have never heard before. As the language adopts new words, there will naturally be new words or old words that become popular. Native English speakers will extract the value by hearing the pronunciation and associate it with the visual representation of the word, but are NOT crippled by any mismatch that occurs because there is ALREADY an acceptance of exceptions to the spelling.

Being comfortable with that mismatch is the key to being comfortable with English.
