The Read with Carylee Show brings the love of literature to children. It gives
a peek behind-the-scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying the hidden talent of these authors who may be living in your community.
In this episode, we will feature our first children's financial literacy book, The Me That Needs to Be, by Ken Harvey.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
"The Me That Needs to Be" tells the story of Ken, an all-star pro football player who travels back in time to teach his younger self how to be more intelligent in managing money.
Ken would take himself through spending habits and knowing how to decide what to buy: NEEDS that are essential to survive versus what you WANT as an optional desire. A new pair of shoes and the latest video game would be nice to have, but one can live without them.
Budgeting comes in and divides into each of these buckets -- saving some money, spending some money, and giving some money away.
Fundamental but most often unpracticed truth for kids and older kids -- the title is a pledge and commitment that you will become "the man that needs to be" by making smart money choices.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ken Harvey was drafted into the National Football League in 1988. He played outside linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals (formerly Phoenix Cardinals) and the Washington Redskins.
From playing professional football, Ken was inspired to write his first children's book when his two boys talked about a show on TV that he found out had no black characters that they can relate with.
Ken says despite having a successful career, he's made terrible financial decisions. "I was depressed. I had a lot of money, and I, unfortunately, lost a lot of money. That could be a cycle of going downhill. But I stopped looking at it as a mistake but as a teaching lesson to grow and learn from. What do I need to do so I don't repeat the same mistake?
As told in The Me That Needs to Be, my story is a gift for someone to hopefully learn from my mistakes and make wise choices. They can walk into any situation with confidence saying, you know what, I know I'm going to make money, I'm going to save money, I'm going to spend money, and I'm going to have fun."
