Ep31: Five Hacks To Write Your Draft Manuscript Inside 6 Weeks

Listen Later

In this episode, i'm diving straight into the essential strategies to write your draft manuscript quickly and efficiently. Drawing from my experience with writing my very first book and lessons learned, I share five powerful hacks that will help you streamline your writing process and avoid common pitfalls. These tips will guide you to finish your draft manuscript in record time. You just need to believe it's possible!

1. Importance of Structure:

  • Understand the different styles of writing to guide your manuscript:
  • Chronological Narrative: Storytelling approach following a timeline.
  • Collective Narrative: Focuses on the stories of multiple individuals or groups.
  • Conceptual Design: Topic-driven structure often used in self-help and how-to books.
  • Look at other books on your shelf to find a structure that resonates with you.

2. Create a Detailed Outline:

  • Four steps to a solid outline:
  • Step 1: Clarify your book's message in two sentences.
  • Step 2: Decide on your book's structure and draft a table of contents.
  • Step 3: Solve the reader's problem by expanding on key points for each chapter.
  • Step 4: Write a draft conclusion to ensure clarity in your message.
  • Research materials but avoid spending too much time on it during the writing process.

3. Enhance Productivity with the Right Environment:

  • Write consistently for one hour a day to build momentum.
  • Find an inviting environment to write in.
  • Set a daily word target (e.g., 1,000 words) to maintain progress.

4. Choose the Right Writing Tools:

  • Stick with familiar tools like Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
  • Ensure all your chapters and outline are organized within your chosen tool to maintain focus.

5. Avoid Editing as You Go:

  • Focus on writing without self-editing to avoid perfectionism and procrastination.
  • Save editing for after the draft is complete to maintain forward momentum.

Episode Highlights:
  • Personal Experience: How taking three years to write my first book led to valuable lessons in efficiency.
  • Hack Implementation: Practical steps and examples for each hack to ensure listeners can apply them immediately.
  • Real-World Examples: References to popular books like "Atomic Habits" by James Clear and "The 4-Hour Workweek" by Tim Ferriss to illustrate different structures.

Quotes:
  • "Structure is not just about outlining; it's about guiding your writing from page to page."
  • "An hour a day of consistent writing can lead to significant progress over time."
  • "Don't edit your work as you go. Focus on getting the draft done first."
