The Read with Carylee Show brings the love of literature to children. It gives a peek behind-the-scenes by evoking the joy of reading, helping children interact with authors, and displaying these authors' hidden talents who may live down your street or even around the world.
As parents and teachers aspire to raise children with a deep capacity for inclusion, some awkward conversations can be made easier through a book. In this episode, we will feature "Not So Different" by Cyana Riley.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
"Not So Different" is a powerful illustration of how important it is for children to understand other cultures and embrace diversity at a young age.
The main character, Riley, is a biracial child born to a Black mom and a white dad. Journeying through the day and meeting friends who have different skin, hair, and attributes define diversity for Riley and realize that that makes the world a much more exciting place to live.
The world needs different people; it's called diversity.
Let's shout out loud about it -- it's up to you and me.
Let's celebrate our differences and spread our love around,
Deep inside of each of us, so much love can be found.
The fun rhymes and cute illustrations make this one an excellent read for kids four to seven years old. As Riley's name was intentional not to give any hints to the gender, children are taught to embrace their uniqueness regardless of color and gender.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Cyana was born and raised in Washington, D.C. She graduated from George Washington University and spent the first six years of her career as a preschool teacher. It was during that time when she fell in love with writing and sharing children's stories.
"My inspiration was my son to know that because his father and I are different, and he looks different than us. I wanted him to know that just because he may look different, that is OK. Everyone is different; that's what makes our world a beautiful place. And I wanted to create something that he could tangibly see and touch to see himself and our family structure in the pages of a book."
