August 26, 1952 When quiet insurance salesman John Agard returns home after being lured out by a mysterious phone call, he finds his wife, Martha, brutally murdered beside the fireplace, with the burned raincoat wrapped near her body. Though Agard insists he is innocent, police grow suspicious of his carefully detailed alibi, the nonexistent caller who summoned him away, and his strangely calm behavior after the crime.
