The Video Monsters kick the doors in on our South Korean Cinema series with an in-depth discussion of the action-packed crime drama, THE OUTLAWS (2017)! The film follows a detective (played by cuddly human wrecking ball, Ma Dong-seok AKA Don Lee) caught in the middle of a Chinese-Korean gang war in the criminal underbelly of Seoul. Nathan, Dan, and Eric discuss how such a fast-paced, plot-driven film manages to weave in lots of humor and brilliant character details, the way the film succeeds at endearing you to a police squad operating somewhat extra-judicially, how Korean action films differ culturally from American action films (hint: no guns!), and why we’re so excited that this is just the beginning of a new action franchise. But mostly we just marvel at the pure charisma of Ma Dong-seok and the pure cinema of seeing him absolutely leveling bad guys. It’s truly a thing of beauty. So grab your fire extinguisher, watch out for sharp objects, and meet us in the Truth Room because it’s time to hang out with the Serious Crimes Unit and pull back the curtain on THE OUTLAWS (2017)!
