While Malaysia prides itself as a multicultural and multiracial country, Bahasa Malaysia (BM) is enshrined as the national language of the country. However, many Malaysians have found it difficult to converse fluently in BM. This has caused certain quarters to label such individuals as "disrespectful" and "unpatriotic".

Along with Bangi MP and former deputy minister of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry YB Dr Ong Kian Ming, we discuss the debate surrounding BM fluency, the challenges faced by non-native speakers, and ways in how one can improve his/her BM proficiency.
