EP5 Why is there homelessness? UPDATED
Episode 5 is very special! We speak with Wren Fialka from Spread the Love Commission. She answers this week's kid question, "Why is there homelessness?" Wren shares how Spread the Love Commission helps people without homes, why she decided to take on such an important problem, and how her experiences as a child paved the path that she is on today. She even teaches listeners how they can help combat homelessness in their community. Wren is an inspiration for all and her heart is bigger than most. It was a sincere honor to connect with her. The work that she is doing is changing the lives of many.
Wren's organization operates out of Jackson, Wyoming. Their mission is to get to the heart of the homeless crisis. Their first outreach began in San Francisco in December of 2014. Only two and a half years later in September of 2016, Spread the Love Commission became an official 501c3. Wren is currently the only staff member, but does have a board, an advisory council, and an amazing team of supporters, partners and volunteers that help keep the organization going as they grow. They are hoping for a few additional staff members by the end of the year and an outreach van.
Many of the organization’s volunteers are the very clients they serve. They are really the key to their success and a way to offer a service that is impactful and empowering. In addition, kids have always been important members of their volunteer team, including Wren’s own nieces. They began working with Wren when they were only 4 and 7 years old.
If you would like to make a care package, Wren recommends: new socks, bottled water, gift cards for food, health kits, breakfast bars, and soap.
