1787 年時愛爾蘭裔的Abraham Lawton及第三任美國總統Thomas Jefferson（1743－1826）曾將酒莊分級。然而，第一個將葡萄酒莊官方分級的是由拿破崙三世（Napoléon III, 1808－1873）下令，為1855 年巴黎的萬國博覽會而制定。

1855年的分級（classé）共57紅葡萄酒莊：
4 個一級（Premiers crus）
12 個二級（Second Crus）
14 個三級（Troisième Crus）
11 個四級（Quatrième Crus）
16 個五級（Cinquième Crus）

現今分級共61 個紅葡萄酒莊：
5 個一級
14 個二級
14 個三級
10 個四級
18 個五級

一級酒莊 （Premiers crus）：
1. Château Haut-Brion，位於Garonne 河上游左岸的pessac-léognan (graves 直到1986).  

位於Garonne 河下游左岸出海口：
- Margaux產酒區的
2. Château Margaux
- Pauillac產酒區的三個酒莊：
3. Château Lafite Rothschild, 原名Lafite
4. Château Latour
5. Château Mouton Rothschild,  (1855年原為二級酒莊；1973年升為一級。原名Brane-Mouton ）

Rothschild家族：
收購Château Lafite （1868）及Chateau Brane-Mouton（1853）的Rothschild家族，是
18世紀德國猶太裔銀行家Mayer Amschel Rothschild的富有家族。1760年代創建了銀行事業後，五個兒子分別拓展至倫敦、巴黎、法蘭克福、維也納和那不勒斯。

1973 年，時任農業部長的Jacques Chirac（1932－2019）簽署同意Château Mouton Rothschild從二級升為一級酒莊，Philippe de Rothschild曾於1961 、1969、1971 年提供升級要求。
