Listen Later

Episode 6 answers the kid question “What is a mineral?” Jessica Robertson, an environmental geologist and mineral enthusiast teaches us about her profession, minerals, related hobbies, and how her love for geology began.

Do you know what an environmental geologist does? Jessica has a very important job helping businesses understand the land their building is on. When Jessica isn’t working she spends time collecting mineral specimens and participating in the Young Mineral Collectors, an online mineral collecting group of over 900 members spanning across 53 countries.

Can you guess how Jessica was introduced to minerals? Here’s a clue: it began when she was a kid. Life and academic experiences played a role in where she is today.

Do you want to see some exciting minerals? Check out the pictures on www.youngmineralcollectors.org or https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/science/geology-101/. You can view Jessica’s fascinating collection of geodes on Instagram @specimenstoriesjr.

Kids 13 or older can enjoy discussing and viewing mineral collections by joining the Young Mineral Collector’s Club on Facebook.
