Do you think you might end up interviewing for a new job or a new position this year? Well, if so, let me tell you, after interviewing thousands of job candidates, there is ONE question that everyone THINKS they are answering correctly – and often times, they ARE NOT and the question I’m talking about is the “What is your Greatest Weakness” question. In today’s episode I’m going to give you the insider-secret of what to say and what NOT to say, so come back and join me for Episode #71 where we’ll talk about it all right here on The Career Woman’s Secret Playbook Podcast!
So, why do interviewers ask about weaknesses? For these reasons: 1. Self-Awareness, 2. Growth Mindset, 3. Cultural Fit, and 4. Honesty and Authenticity. And what are we looking for when we ask this question? There are 3 main reasons: 1. Balanced Self-Reflection, 2. Relevance to the Role, and 3. Problem-Solving Skills.
Now, here are my favorite 5 tips on how to answer this question: 1. Be Honest, But Selective, 2. Show Awareness and Self-Reflection, 3. Frame It Positively, 4. Keep It Professional, 5. End on a Positive Note.
Here's a Sample Answer from a Job Candidate - And Yes, I offered her the Job!
"I’d say my greatest weakness is that I can be overly detail-oriented. Early in my career, I would spend a lot of time trying to make everything perfect, which occasionally slowed me down. However, I’ve learned to balance my focus on quality with efficiency by prioritizing tasks and using tools like project management software to stay on track. This adjustment has allowed me to maintain high standards without getting bogged down in unnecessary details."
