Lots of questions surrounding this movie…specifically, “why?”. Emilia Pérez has been cleaning up nearly every award category in not just the recent Oscars, but the Academy Awards, Cannes, and other festivals. Despite its recognition with the different committees, though, it’s received tons of backlash since it’s become available to audiences. Some criticisms include racist stereotypes of Mexican culture, tokenism when it comes to trans people, and no one from the movie utilizing their platform to actually speak about trans-rights/issues
