EP9: American Folklore: Jersey Devil & Tommyknockers

Listen Later

In this episode, we discuss two American folktales/legends. The first one we discuss is The Jersey Devil. This is a folktale originating from New Jersey between 1730s-American Revolutionary war. The Jersey Devil is a tale about a cursed, monstrous child haunting the pine barrens. The second folktale we discuss is the Tommyknockers. This tale originates from Cornish (English) miners in Pennsylvania during the 1820s. The tale alleges that there are small elf/brownie like creatures that help miners in the mines, play tricks on them such as stealing tools and food, and do good by warning miners with knocks when a cave-in is eminent. The Tommyknockers are closely related to other fae creatures and are seen overall as good. The tale has spread across the US to California during the gold rush. It has also changed overtime to include the spirits of past miners as Tommyknockers warning their friends about cave-ins. I hope you enjoy!
