Ephesians 4:30-32
How would you feel if someone invited you into his home, and then began to make you miserable? Here you are a guest in the home or perhaps a permanent resident, and this person is just trying to make life difficult for you. What would you do? Well, I don’t know what you would do, but I know what the Holy Spirit does; He grieves. The Holy Spirit of God lives within us and Paul warns us in Ephesians 4:30, “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you are sealed unto the day of redemption.” Now the Holy Spirit will not leave us. We’re sealed by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said to His disciples, “The Spirit of Truth will abide with you forever.” But as He dwells within us, He is the Holy Ghost, the Holy Guest. Let’s treat Him as not a guest but the Master of the house.
Let’s not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. How do you grieve the Holy Spirit of God? Our attitudes will do it. Verse 31, “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.” That’s rather negative but it’s important. How easy it is for me to harbor bitterness in my heart or express that bitterness and malice through wrath and anger and evil speaking. Have we spoken evil about a brother Christian, a sister Christian? That grieves the Holy Spirit. “And be kind one to another.” Oh, are we being kind? Neglect will grieve the Holy Spirit. Today, think of someone to whom you can be kind. Oh, they might not be kind to you, but remember you want to keep the Holy Spirit happy down inside.
By neglect we grieve Him. By an unforgiving spirit, “Be kind one to another, tenderhearted forgiving one another even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.” A forgiving spirit. After all, God has forgiven us. We should forgive others. Let’s not take the Holy Spirit for granted today. When it seems easy to say something mean, ask the Holy Spirit for love. When we want to lose our temper, ask the Holy Spirit for self-control. When we have an opportunity to do a kindness to somebody, ask the Holy Spirit for love and sympathy. Let’s not grieve the Holy Spirit today. Let’s make Him happy that He lives within.
