The Safe Space

Ephesians 5

Welcome to The Safe Space!

Paul calls believers to imitate God in everything they do, because they are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ, who loved us and gave himself as a sacrifice for us—a pleasing aroma to God.

He warns them to turn away from sexual immorality, impurity, greed, and all kinds of obscene or foolish talk. Such things have no place among God’s people. Instead, let there be thankfulness. Those who choose a life of sin have no inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God.

Once they were full of darkness, but now they have light from the Lord. So live as people of light. Let their lives produce only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord, and take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness. Instead, expose them. For the light makes everything visible, and it is light that makes everything seen.

So Paul urges, “Wake up, sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Live wisely, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Do not act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Do not be drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit—singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Paul then speaks to families, calling for a relationship marked by love and respect. Wives are to submit to their husbands as to the Lord, just as the church submits to Christ. Husbands are to love their wives just as Christ loved the church—giving himself up for her, making her holy and clean. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they love their own bodies, caring for them and cherishing them.

This union reflects a great mystery—the relationship between Christ and his church.

Paul closes this section with a simple and powerful truth: each husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
