Ephesians 5:1-2

Ephesians 5:1-2

You have noticed I’m sure that little children are great imitators. Oh it’s fun to watch a child imitate father or the little girl go into the kitchen and imitate mother. We parents and grandparents have to be very careful to set the right example. Paul had this in mind when he wrote Ephesians 5:1-2, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;” and that word “followers” means imitators. “Be imitators of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor.” Well, how do we imitate God? Well, first of all, in love. “Be therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love.” That’s a basic lesson in the Christian life.

“By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, [said the Lord Jesus] that you have love one for another.” “A new commandment I give to you,” said our Savior, “that you love one another” (John 13:34-35). One of the most important things a child can learn is to love. And where does the child pick up that lesson on love? By watching mother and dad. If they love each other and are kind to each other, it doesn’t take long for the child to start imitating the father and the mother. Not only in love but in sacrifice. “Christ loved us and gave Himself for us” (paraphrase). Children don’t realize until they grow up how much sacrifice is involved in a home. Mother and father sacrifice often that children might have all that they need and sometimes what they want. He’s saying to us here in Ephesians 5, imitate God. He sacrificed for you. You sacrifice for Him and for others.

Thirdly, the fragrance, “an offering that’s a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor.” Mother and father want to keep the right kind of fragrance in the home, a spiritual fragrance that glorifies God. This reminds me of Mary in John chapter 12 where she brought her ointment and anointed the Lord Jesus and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. Let’s imitate God in love, in sacrifice, and in bringing beauty and fragrance to the lives of others.
