Ephesians 5:19-21

“Be filled with the Spirit.” Now that’s the commandment Paul gives to us in Ephesians 5:18 and immediately we raise the question, “Alright Paul, how can I tell if I am filled with the Holy Spirit? One person says this. Another person says that. What are the evidences of the fullness of the Holy Spirit?” Well, Paul gives them to us in Ephesians 5:19-21. When you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, you are joyful, thankful and submissive. Let’s talk about being joyful. “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

Paul had talked about drunkenness in verse 18. He had contrasted a drunk with a Christian who is filled with the Spirit. When a person is drunk, he may have a feeling of glee and hilarity, exhilaration, he wants to sing songs, ah but it’s not real. He’s living in a fantasy world of illusion. When the Holy Spirit of God controls our lives, there is a true joy.

Now what kind of a joy is this? Well, it’s a joy that is a shared joy. We “speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” We sing to one another. He’s not talking here about a selfish joy that we keep to ourselves. He’s talking about the Church in fellowship. Here are people in the fellowship of God’s Church filled with the Holy Spirit, ministering to one another; a shared joy in speaking and singing; a sincere joy. It comes from the heart. “Singing and making melody in your heart,” not just from your lips.

By the way I notice that this joy is a Scriptural joy; psalms and hymns. He’s talking here about the Old Testament Scriptures that they would sing or turn into songs. Our joy is based on the Word of God and our joy is motivated by the Spirit of God. We sing to the Lord. Here is the Holy Spirit within us singing to God the Father and God the Son. What a marvelous thing that you and I should be a part of such an experience as this! When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you are joyful, you are thankful, you are submissive.
