Ephesians 5:20

Ephesians 5:20

The Spirit-filled Christian is joyful, and the Spirit-filled Christian is thankful. This is what Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:19-20, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” We are joyful. “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” We are thankful. And then in verse 21 he tells us we are submissive. Let’s talk about how to be thankful. Paul has mentioned thanksgiving before. Ephesians 5:4. He said get rid of filthiness and foolish talking and instead give thanks. Thankfulness. A heart of gratitude. An attitude of gratitude.

Now he tells us that this thanksgiving that we give should be something that is a constant factor in our lives. We are thankful always. Notice that. “Giving thanks always.” That’s not easy to do. If he said quoting Scripture always, we could do that. He says, pray without ceasing, that’s rather difficult. He says, be thankful always for all things. Now that’s hard to do! Hard to give thanks when the weather is 30 below zero and you’ve got a flat tire on a busy highway. It’s hard to give thanks when you’re standing in the hospital waiting for the surgeon to come down and give you the report on the surgery. We claim by faith, Romans 8:28. How can we give thanks for all things? Because “we know that all things are working together for good to them that love God” (paraphrase). It doesn’t say they’re going to end up good. It says they’re working for good now.

By faith I can give thanks for the good things that are going to come out of my experiences today. I notice that this thankfulness is based on the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is not only our Savior, but He is our Lord. The Lord Jesus Christ and what He says, we can claim. We can be grateful to God on the authority of Jesus Christ. So let’s read the Word of God. Let’s believe what our Lord says, and let’s give thanks always for all things.
