Ephesians 5:21 (9/26/19)

Listen Later

* The fuel for all relationships (marriage, family/friends, work) is mutual submission OUT OF REVERENCE FOR CHRIST.
* Only a reverence for Christ would keep us in a place of surrender to others.
* Oneness is preceded by twoness - two “complete” people submitted to Christ submitting to each other.
* ex: “Why should I submit to you when I’m mad at you? Because Christ submitted Himself to God even though He knew it meant death. So I’m going to submit to Christ.”
* This is the mindset before you get to vs 22 where Paul reminds wives to submit to their husbands AS TO THE LORD.
* Submission is concerned with WINNING! It’s a military term that means to “arrange in rank.”
* Submission isn’t about the order of authority but the operation of it - it’s about how you can win a battle!
* essentially, “if you want to win you have to stay aligned under the right authority - when you do you’ll maintain the power you need to beat Satan!”
* Presuppositions to a wife’s submission - 1) Mutual submission is the foundation, 2) Men and women are equal, 3) The man has the greater responsibility (Ephesians 5:25).
* If he sacrifices she submits in the same way we submit to Christ because of His sacrifice.
* Picture - Jesus washing the disciples feet.
* He submitted to God AND to the disciples when He did this.
* If a husband doesn’t love his wife like this and she doesn’t submit then he’s held responsible just as Adam was held responsible for Eve’s sin when he failed in his responsibility.
