Ephesians 5:21
How can we tell if we are filled with the Holy Spirit? We’re commanded to be filled. “And be not drunk with wine, in which is excess; but be filled with the Spirit,” says Ephesians 5:18. If it’s wrong to be drunk, it’s wrong not to be filled with the Holy Spirit! If somebody showed up in church drunk next Sunday, well, the board might discipline that person; but I wonder how many will show up who are not filled with the Holy Spirit? Well, the same verse that tells me it’s wrong to be drunk tells me it’s wrong not to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Well, how can you tell? Well, those who are filled with the Holy Spirit are joyful (verse 19), they’re thankful (verse 20) and Ephesians 5:21, they are submissive. “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Now submission is not slavery. Submission is not subjugation. (Ephesians 5:18-21)
Slavery keeps you in bondage. You do not fulfill yourself. Submission gives you freedom. Freedom in the Lord, and you become all that you can be in the Lord Jesus Christ. To begin with we are first of all submitted to the Lord. He must be the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives. He must be Lord of all that is a part of our lives. First we submit to God because He is Lord. Then we submit to one another. “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” If we are submitted to the Lord and our fear is directed toward Him, we are yielded to Him, we need not fear anything else. We’ll be joyful, we’ll be thankful, and we will be submissive.
What’s it mean to submit to one another? It doesn’t mean to become a doormat. It simply means to have an attitude of service. Some people look at others and say, “What can they do for me?” The Spirit filled Christian says, “What can I do for them? How can I serve the Lord by serving them? How can I use the Word of God to help them?” “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” And Paul goes on to talk to husbands and wives, parents and children, employers and employees. When you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, you’re joyful, thankful and submissive, first of all, submitted to the Lord.
