Ephesians 5:22-24
How many people does it take to have a marriage? Well, a bride and a groom and a preacher or judge (whoever is going to perform the ceremony) and perhaps some witnesses. That varies from state to state. But don’t forget the most important person at the marriage, the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians chapter 5 verses 22 through 24 Paul writes to the wives, but he has something to say to husbands and to all of us. “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.”
Well, he’s talking here about submitting to one another. Notice verse 21, “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” This means that the wife is submitted to Christ and submitted to her husband. It means that the husband is submitted to Christ and to his wife. It means that the husband and the wife are submitted to the other believers in the fellowship of the Church, the fellowship of the body. Fellowship in Christ and submission to Christ always go together. When we are submitted to one another, this is not subjugation. Rather this is a yielded spirit, a yielded attitude, a yielded will in love and in obedience to the Lord. First we are submitted to Christ. He is the example. We have no problem being submitted to Him. When you stop to think of all He has done for us. He’s the head of the Church. He’s the Savior of the body. He’s the one who died for us.
Paul is going to go on to tell the husbands to act like the Lord Jesus Christ in loving their wives and sanctifying and building them up in the faith. A Christian wife really has no problem submitting to a husband who’s filled with the Holy Spirit. If he’s joyful and thankful and submissive, she has no problem at all yielding herself to him. And a wife can obey the Lord and a wife can obey her husband and bring glory to the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in Christian love.
